As many of you know, the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) and the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), co-sponsors of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), announced significant changes to the USMLE program last week. They include:
- Changing Step 1 score reporting from a three-digit numeric score to reporting only pass/fail
- Reducing the allowable number of exam attempts on each Step or Step Component from six to four; and
- Requiring all examinees to successfully pass Step 1 as a prerequisite for taking USMLE Step 2 CS (Clinical Skills)
At this point, all we know for certain is that the pass/fail change won’t go into effect before January 2022. However, there are still questions surrounding the timing and
detailed implementation of these changes.
We will be providing more information as we learn it, but for many of you, the changes
likely won’t affect your preparation strategy (unless you weren’t planning to take Step 1 until 2022).
